Stylish Santorini has been a special destination for decades, especially for couples. One of the Cyclades islands, Santorini is unmistakably Greek. The island is postcard-pretty, with distinctive blue and white buildings atop a soaring, moon-shaped crescent of layered cliffs. This uniquely shaped island is a delight; its form the result of a volcanic eruption back in 1500 BC. The winding cobbled back streets of Thira are lined with bohemian boutiques, stylish shops, restaurants and bars, many with views of the volcanic crater. From there, sunsets shimmering over the rippling inky blue waters of the Aegean Sea are stunning. A little further up the coast is the romantic hilltop village of Oia, where some of the most dramatic sea views on the island are to be found, as well as hideaway restaurants still frequented by locals.
Beaches on the island are unique – either coarse black volcanic sand, or red sand receding into deep blue waters. The most famous beach, Kamari, is situated on the eastern side of the island and comprises five kilometers of black sand and shingle, and is the island’s most popular resort area.
The towering promontory of Mesa Vouno separates Kamari from what are known as the twin resorts of Perissa and Perivolos. These resorts are quieter than Kamari, and geared up for water sports enthusiasts. On the southern tip of the island, Akrotiri is not to be missed. Culture vultures will delight in for its Pompeii-like ruins - a Minoan town which is currently being excavated from volcanic ash. For a special holiday, Santorini is the spot!
